Received from: TUC Black Workers Conference
There is a growing rise in far-right parties using social media to influence supporters. This motion proposes engaging with those audiences by addressing cultural concerns rather than relying on ideological labels. Far right groups have tapped into cultural grievances and economic anxieties, gaining traction across much of the Western world through algorithmic reach and large volumes of authentic short form content. In contrast, official union and left of centre channels struggle to match the scale and speed of this output.
We can no longer rely on others to counter this trend. Instead, we must learn from effective grassroots tactics and build a bottom-up approach that speaks directly and respectfully to people’s everyday concerns.
Conference resolves to:
i. educate activists in effective, respectful online engagement that focuses on cultural issues and avoids alienating labels
ii. establish a social media task force to support activists, helping them use digital tools confidently and stay consistent in messaging
iii. measure and evaluate the strategy, using data to refine methods and improve impact.
The aim is to meet those drawn to far right narratives with compassion, understanding, and a constructive vision for society. The future is shaped through organising around jobs, pay, and conditions.
