Congress recognises that 2027 marks the 10th anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire, in which 72 people so tragically lost their lives.
Congress is appalled that prosecutions of those responsible have still not begun.
Congress stands in solidarity with the bereaved, survivors and residents in the fight for justice.
Congress applauds the firefighters, firefighters’ control, paramedics, local government and other workers, who responded to the fire and its immediate aftermath.
Congress believes it is a national scandal that thousands of residents still live in high rise residential buildings with cladding and other serious fire safety failings.
Congress is shocked that cuts continue to be imposed on the fire and rescue service.
Congress opposes the continued drive towards deregulation and introduction of private profiteers into public services, which was a root cause of the Grenfell Tower fire.
Congress welcomes the proposal to create a college of fire and rescue but demands that it focuses on introducing national standards across UK fire and rescue services and gives the FBU a central role in its functioning.
Congress resolves to:
i. demand that all responsible for the Grenfell Tower fire, including politicians, are brought to justice.
ii. demand the immediate remediation of all housing with fire safety failures.
iii. support the FBU’s demand for sustained central government investment in the fire and rescue service and its Cuts Kill campaign.
iv. support the FBU’s ongoing serious accident investigation into the Grenfell Tower fire, to learn the lessons for emergency control staff and firefighters.
